Photography By David Price

Subject: Old Man

Location: Ratna Kathmandu

Comment: One of the most compelling portraits I produced in Nepal, against the white wall this man was incredibly handsome and his eyes captivating.

Subject: Homeless Boy

Location: Ratna Kathmandu

Comment: This boy looked on as I worked, he seemed so happy if not a little thin. One of the most upsetting things I saw in Nepal was on the following day I came across this homeless boy again sniffing glue. Close to tears I asked my guide if we could help him. After making enquiries I was told he was too old to start school and would probably run away.

Subject: Sadhu (Holy Man)

Location: Durbar Square Kathmandu

Comment: I photographed this holy man several times during my visit. I used the temple behind him to create a black background and a homemade reflector to light his face. The resulting image on my home page is as good a portrait as I have produced.

Subject: Vijaya Thapa

Location: Kathmandu Tailors

Comment: Vijaya became a great friend to me, acting as a second guide I called him my bodyguard! Often late and once not turning up at all over two weeks I grew to really like him and I accepted his Nepalese timekeeping.

Subject: School Children

Location: Bhaktapur

Comment: This area is a myriad of narrow streets just like this one. My guide Komal and I arrived as hundreds of children were walking to school, they were everywhere. In Nepal men hold hands and openly show affection this image sums up to me a lot about the country!

Subject: Farmer

Location: Kagati Gaun village

Comment: Sanu the producer acted as guide on several occasions. He took me to Kagati an hours ride by motorbike from my hotel. He had made a documentary here and we were made extremely welcome. As with virtually everywhere I went in Nepal I was overwhelmed with willing models. This man lit with natural light through a window opening.

Subject: Onlooker

Location: Kathmandu abattoir

Comment: Behind me was an open air abattoir which I photographed at 6.00am one morning. It was quite shocking and I have chosen not to put the images on my site. I looked round to see if I could get to an elevated position, this girl ran to the lamp stopped for a few seconds and ran off. You just had to be there!

Subject: Sadhu (Holy Man)

Location: Durbar Square Kathmandu

Comment: I built great rapport with the Sadhu over a period and even visited their home. This image was created on my last working day I had previously used four out of the five Sadhu pictured. Problems occurred soon after this shot, the police moved us on and then another photographer decided to start making use of the Sadhu , models , guides and translator all of which I was paying for. I had words!

Subject: Curious Children

Location: Teku Asylum community

Comments: I wanted to see some real poverty in Nepal and my guide Komal took me to Teku. an illegal riverside squat things got a little scary when we were challenged by some of the senior men here. I only found out after we left that they had a problem with my guides and not me. They thought they were corrupt and were trying to get money for there own gain. It was also a red hot day!

Subject: Sadhu (Holy Man)

Location: Durbar Square Kathmandu

Comment: I learnt from this trip that you should travel with the minimum of equipment and I took far too much. I was however short of a reflector so made one with a cardboard box, silver paper and tape. I took it everywhere and to me it helped make this shot. Constantly harassed by street vendors I made my guide write on the reverse "No thank you I am working" as a last resort it worked well!

Subject: Drying clay bottles

Location: Bhaktapur

Comment: I was stopped in my tracks when I looked down an alley to see the light on these vessels. Needless to say I spent 20 minuets photographing them.

Subject: Football

Location: Kavre

Comment: I am not a sports photographer but covered the tournament for UAP ltd. This man was having a go at the referee and behind him a terrace of paddy fields.

Subject: Man at Kagati

Location: Kagati Gaun

Comment: This man kept appearing everywhere I went and just loved to have his image captured. With the ability to show the subject a picture on screen I did note that many of the older Nepalese have very bad eyes. Often struggling to see the image. However if they could see or not they always smiled and showed approval without exception.

Subject: Lost Ball

Location: Pashupatinath Temple

Comment: Just a few meters from this boy a Hindu is being cremated by the side of the river. I am not sure if he had lost the ball or was playing in the river. He did however go to the bank with his ball and I only had a few seconds to capture this shot.

Subject: Sadhu (Holy Man)

Location: Durbar Sqr Kathmandu

Comments: I managed model release documents for both these Sadhu. Not wanting to confuse the two I wrote on one glasses and the other small. One had the biggest glasses I have ever seen and the other was about 4 ft 10 inches tall. I love the angle I captured this image at and the white palace wall was a treat.

Subject: Road to Kavre

Location: Old man big beard

Comment: On our ten hour bus journey to the village we stopped at a large bridge. This man was almost guarding it. I am not sure why he wore the hat as it was midday and rather hot.

Subject: Model Anjali Ramtel

Location: Kathmandu

Comment: My last working day I photographed Vijaya my guide and two Nepalese women dressed in Hindi costume. This is Anjali I made use of the black doorway at Durbery sqr again to produce this stock image.

Subject: Football pitch

Location: Kavre

Comment: The word pitch is relevant here! In the foreground is the football pitch use in the tournament. You can see by the vertical terraces in the background that the playing area was far from flat. Also pictured a UAP banner and two children playing.

Subject: Boy

Location: Kagati Gaun

Comments: I just love the light here, this boy is lit from an open window.

Subject: Three Boys

Location: Kagati Gaun

Comment: This image was not posed the boys were just stood watching me work. Both their curiosity and shyness are captured here.

Subject: Ladies Festival

Location: Kathmandu

Comment: This is posed I asked the Sadhu to sit as hundreds of Hindu ladies filed past. This was the day of the Ladies festival and men were not allowed in the temples.

Subject: Jibskya Das

Location: Kathmandu

Comment: Jibskya is 68 years old and extremely short well under five feet. He was in the same square every day I visited it with no exception. I am not sure what he thought of me but he was a great model.

Subject: Candy floss salesmen

Location: Kathmandu

Comment: Everywhere you went in Nepal boys like this one sell candy floss. This one asked me several times to make a purchase and as I can't stand the stuff I finally agreed to photograph him instead.

Subject: Fruit seller

Location: Ratner Park

Comments: Rarely in Nepal was the light this good. Most mornings were overcast and after the first two hours of daylight the contrast and shadows were unbearable. If it was fine in the late afternoon you got about an hour of light like this. As with most of Asia the way people transport goods is often amazing. This man had a mobile fruit shop on his bike.

Subject: Vijaya and Anjali

Location: Swoyambhu Temple

Comments: I asked Vijaya to model and bought the costume. He was embarrassed and would only travel by taxi!
Subject: Old Man
Location: Ratna Kathmandu

Comment: One of the most compelling portraits I produced in Nepal, against the white wall this man was incredibly handsome and his eyes captivating.
